Gynecomastia is enlarged male breasts, an aesthetic problem that often causes other concerns such as low self-esteem, anxiety, and even depression. This problem can negatively approach a male’s emotional well-being, causing him to avoid activities such as swimming that cause him to take his shirt off. Dr. Cooperman offers male breast reduction surgery to fix gynecomastia to males in the New Jersey and New York area. This procedure sculpts and contours the chest area, leaving the patient with more self-confidence and improved quality of life.
Gynecomastia is caused by hormonal fluctuations, usually onset during male adolescence. Sometimes it resolves on its own, but other times the issue persists into adulthood. Other causes include ongoing use of certain medications or steroids, and massive weight fluctuations.
You will have to have a consultation prior to receiving a male breast reduction to ensure if you have true gynecomastia, enlarged breast tissues or pseudo-gynecomastia which is the result of excess fat. This consultation and physical exam will help the surgeon assess the best treatment route to get the aesthetic results you are hoping for.
The male breast reduction procedure is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the results of the physical exam, different methods for getting rid of the tissue and fat may be utilized. This may include liposuction techniques, removal of glandular
tissue and fat, and/or removal of skin around the areola to reduce its size.
The recovery from the procedure generally takes 3-4 days of rest from regular activities. Patients typically report a mild degree of discomfort throughout the treated area that can be alleviated by taking any medications prescribed by the doctor, as directed. Patients will need to wear a compression garment over the treatment area for several weeks to help minimize swelling and bruising and to provide additional support to the tissues while they heal.
After a follow-up appointment, the plastic surgeon at Dr. Cooperman will clear the patient to resume their normal activities once completely healed.
